Choosing a Metal Finish: Start with Function, Then Define Appearance

Corrosion resistance, conductivity, insulation, assembly and appearance are connected decisions, not separate checkboxes.

Begin with the Service Environment

Indoor or outdoor use, humidity, heat, cleaning frequency and chemical exposure all influence finish selection. Define the environment and expected life before discussing color and texture.

Mark Areas That Must Remain Uncoated

Grounding points, mating surfaces, threads, conductive contact zones and precision dimensions may require masking or special treatment. If they are not defined early, the finish can directly affect fit and function.

Define Appearance in Executable Terms

Use color references, gloss, texture samples, primary cosmetic surfaces and acceptable variation so the supplier knows how appearance will be judged, rather than relying on “good appearance.”
